Corvette Featured Marque, Rolex Monterey August 16-19, 2023
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion joins Corvette in celebrating its 70th Anniversary and racing history with a display of the most important cars in its past. Corvettes also will be on-track racing among the 400 historic and authentic race cars competing in 14 classes each day Wednesday through Saturday at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, August 16-19.
The first Corvette prototype was presented at the Waldorf Astoria General Motors Motorama January 4, 1953, and was a sensation. In 1955, it gained sports car credibility fitted with the new Chevrolet small block Chevy V8. The 1956 model added performance options, new styling, roll up windows and a removable hard top. Sales soared.
Corvette racing history began with this 1956 model under the watchful eye of Chevrolet engineer, later coined the "Father of the Corvette", Zora Arkus-Duntov. Corvette captured the Sports Car Club of America's C-Production National Championship with Dr. Dick Thompson "the racing dentist" behind the wheel. It also set Daytona Beach class speed records. The early success whetted the appetite of hundreds of drivers who went on to compete and win in the 1950s and early 1960s both in the US and internationally including: Walt Hansgen, Delmo Johnson, Dave McDonald, Bob Bondurant, Dick Guldstrand, John Fitch, John Greenwood and Alan Barker.
