Now the bad news.  Put-In-Bay Races, the traditional salute to racing in the late 1950s and 1960s, originally set for September 22-23, 2020 is postponed to 2021.  This event is usually held on the roads and airport runways of the original South Bay Island site, an island in Lake Erie.
More bad news.  The VRG-VDCA Jefferson 500 vintage races set for August 6-9, 2020 at Summit Point, West Virginia has been cancelled for this year.  Info: www.vrgonline.org or www.vintagedrive.com.

Chris Pook & the History of The Long Beach GP by Gordon Kirby

Posted Jun-01-20 at 2:59 PM By Dan Davis
This superb new book from Racemaker Press is a great, timely read as IndyCar opens its season this coming Saturday.

The book relates how Mario Andretti won the 1984 CART Indy car Long Beach race, which started the event's financial and wider success after years of glamour but no profits with F.1.
The Long Beach Grand Prix through-the-streets races continues as a premier road racing event in todays IndyCar Series.  “So you really wanna race in my streets” was the early reaction in 1973 when Chris Pook proposed a plan of racing and city improvements that would follow.  That came from his watching the 1973 Monaco F.1 on ABC’s Wide World of Sports TV program. With the early help and guidance from Dan Gurney and many others in navigating state, city and racing politics and years of 24/7 effort it all came together.  The first race was a 1975 F5000 race won by Brian Redman followed by years of esthetically successful, but financially challenged, F.1 races.

This most entertaining and detailed book, with wonderful photos, presents the whole important saga from then until today.  It is a big 320 gloss pages book with some 170 photos for many enjoyable reading sessions.  It is available at Racemaker Press 617-773-6533, www.racemakerpress.com
