2012 Thursday January 26: A Flash Scottsdale Arizona Auction Report By Rick Carey. The total is already 2.6% above 2011 Arizona results. Even with one auction not yet reporting (Russo and Steele).
The biggest factor was Barrett-Jackson where the total sale, even with just 22 more cars (1.8% of 2011's total) crossing the block, was 31% ahead of 2011 and 34.6% ahead of 2010. That is in large part attributable to the resounding success of the Salon Collection assembled by Gordon McCall which brought Barrett-Jackson back into the million-dollar club in a big way with eight lots selling for hammer bids of $1 million or more, nine with commission included. Even discounting the charity sale of a '64 Ford Fairlane custom to benefit the Armed Forces Foundation (a car that sold at Las Vegas in October for $700,000, then was donated back to the Foundation by the high bidder, Ron Pratte), it was a dramatic turnaround for Barrett-Jackson, which hadn't had a million dollar transaction since 2009s Ford Tri-Motor airplane nor a million-dollar car since 2008.
Record sales were not only plentiful, they were often records by factors of two, three or even four. Gooding's alloy bodied 300SL Gullwing set tongues in motion when it sold for $4,200,000, $4,620,000 with commission, on Friday but it was bookended by B-J's Saturday sale of a steel bodied Gullwing (with 4,217 miles on its odometer) for $2,000,000, $2,200,000 with commission. Those are mind-bending numbers, even for headline cars that will occupy center stage in any collection.
In all there were sixteen (counting the Fairlane) million dollar sales on the hammer. Remarkably only four were Ferraris. Other marques were Mercedes-Benz (the two Gullwings), Tucker, Bentley (the Mark VI Franay Drophead which brought $2,750,000 with commission at WestWorld after selling at B-J Palm Beach in 2006 for $1,728,000 and a 4 1/2 Liter Tourer), Duesenberg (two Model Js), DeSoto (the Adventurer concept car), Daimler, Lamborghini (Miura P400 SV) and Isotta-Fraschini with Barrett-Jackson accounting for eight, Gooding for seven and RM for one.
The overall result is even more remarkable in the context of the pre-sale buzz: there was no OMG, gee whiz, curve-setter in the Scottsdale consignments. Plenty of good, even great cars, but nothing that had onlookers crawling all over themselves to witness the bidding for a Testa Rossa or one-off Duesenberg or Bentley. There was however, several bidders building mega collections.
The other notable takeaway is that it was the 50th highest sale at $410,000, $451,000 with commission, before a "Muscle Car" appeared in Scottsdale's top transactions list, B-J's '69 Camaro ZL1, appeared (OK, not including two L88 Corvette sales, one at Gooding and another announced by Russo and Steele, but they're not "Muscle Cars" per se) and even farther down the list at 72nd before a Dodge Challenger Hemi appeared (and it's another Pony Car.) The first real "Muscle Car" was B-J's 440 Road Runner Superbird, off the top 100 at 107th place. Even in Scottsdale, symbolic home of the genre, "Muscle Cars" are passé, it seems.
"Customs", however, have come to the fore. Barrett-Jackson had 386 lots self-styled as "Custom" -- not counting street rods, 30% of the whole B-J docket. Aside from the aforementioned Fairlane they included two '62 Corvettes which brought $408,800 and $357,500 respectively. They were beautiful cars.
That's it for now, but there's lots more where this came from which will cover many, many pages complete with all the details in the March issue of Victory Lane Magazine.

2012 Monday January 23: If The Strong Auction Sale Prices At The Various Arizona Collectable Car Auctions Are An Indicator, Then The Year Will Be Exciting For Collectable And Racing Car Buyers And Sellers. Rick Carey, Victory Lane Magazine’s auction reporter notes for racing and sports car enthusiasts one highlight was the Alloy 300SL Mercedes Gullwing Coupe sold at just over four million dollars at Gooding. The bookend was a similar car, but with steel bodywork at Barrett-Jackson at just over two million dollars.
Rick’s reports and impressions from RM Auctions, Russo and Steel Auctions, Bonhams, Gooding and Barrett-Jackson add up to a year when again, great cars with great history and superb preparation were bringing excellent prices, yet good value, in light of future prospects. At the same time, ordinary fun collectable drivers were bringing more than expected prices. The buyers and excitement at auction week were there in abundance.
2012 Thursday January 19: The next monthly Victory Lane Magazine Auto Enthusiasts and Racers Lunch Is Wednesday February 15th. Gary Horstkorta, San Francisco Region SCCA Historian, Will Report on His Visit To The 2011 September 16-18 Goodwood Revival.

The estate grounds were a World War II grass runway for Spitfire fighter planes during World War II. The peripheral roads were converted into a road racing circuit after the war. Both club and international races were held there through late 1966. Lord March reopened the circuit for the annual Fall Goodwood Revival vintage-racing weekend saluting 1966 and earlier cars that raced at Goodwood plus had a vintage motorcycle grid. The event is grand theater with recreations of historic businesses, WWII Spitfires and Mustangs taking off from the grass airfield, and a requirement for spectators to appear in period apparel. Race Car Entries for this world-class event are highly sought after. The presentation of this event complete with historic references will be a treat.

2012 Monday January 16: Abarth Race Car Plus Abarth Owners Registry And Reunion
First a registry then a reunion is being planned and supported by Victory Lane Magazine, by request from some owners and organized by Victory Lane Motorsports Marketing. The reunion could be at a vintage race or at a concours or both in the new few years.
The Italian Abarth production Sports Cars and all out racing cars had a winning history in the 1950s and 1960s. Abarths achieved many times Mille Miglia class winners, many class wins in FIA races and multiple SCCA National Championships in class.
The most recognized in North America were the Fiat Abarth GT Zagato Coupes known as Double Bubble Abarths for the trademark Zagato two humps on the roofline.
Powered by a well-tuned Fiat 750cc pushrod engine. They won SCCA’s H-Production class for years in the late 1950s and early 1960s, thousands were imported by Roosevelt Automotive. The similar smooth top Monza Coupes of the same era were powered by twin overhead cam versions of the same engine series in various sizes. They were very successful in FIA racing. Later on the Simca Abarth’s and the rare Porsche Abarth’s were winning coupes. The Abarth versions of the Fiat 124 have become very collectable. Abarth also built winning FIA Sports Prototypes.
In the last decade most of these cars have disappeared from vintage racing as their values have skyrocketed. Even back in the day tiny new Double Bubble cost more then a Corvette. Today they are at or well over the $100,000 price depending on condition and history.
These increasing value typically result in such potential vintage race cars only entering the best vintage races where period authentic and correct preparation is encouraged. Accordingly, the date and event section will be made after sufficient registered cars are available and their owners indicate what vintage race or races are of interest. The Road America circuit and the annual July vintage racing weekend, is a favorite of Historic Can-Am owner/drivers and the very large crowd of spectators attracted to one of the largest annual gatherings of vintage and historic racing cars.
The Historic Can-Am Association has been holding Historic Can-Am Features at Road America since 1992. The big powerful unlimited Can-Am cars of 1966-1974 are an awesome visual treat and a favorite of spectators. The cars power of up to 1,000 horsepower giving unbelievable acceleration, unusual aerodynamics, and speeds of over 200 mph providing an exciting spectator experience and a glimpse back in time when “excess was barely adequate.” The rules were almost non existent, leading to great innovation: four wheels, four fenders, two seats and go racing.
The Historic Can-Am cars will be on-track twice each day, Friday and Saturday for practice and qualifying sessions followed by the big Sunday afternoon Feature race.
During the event a Historic Can-Am marquee will be a center for driver and owner hospitality. Fans will be invited to the tent to purchase Can-Am memorabilia, subscribe to Victory Lane Magazine at special event rates and participate in an autograph session with past Can-Am participants.

The 1966-1974 Can-Am Series was a time “When Excess Was Barely Adequate.” It was a time of unlimited power, motivation and minimum restrictive rule; four wheels, four fenders, two seats and all the power you can create.
The Can-Am cars of 1966-1974 were the most powerful, fastest and most impressive road racing cars in history up to that time. They created a shock wave of power, sound and audacious ground shaking presence as they roared on the road racing circuits across North America. To this day, they are the most crowd pleasing of any vintage racing cars at great vintage racing weekends.
Road America was the favorite road racing circuit of the original era and is today the favorite of the many Historic Can-Am owner/drivers who will bring legendary Can-Am cars to “The Hawk.”
These great cars from factory teams of Lola, March, McLaren, Porsche, Chaparral, BRM, Ford, Ferrari were driven by world class drivers including: Denny Hulme, Bruce McLaren, Phil Hill, George Follmer, Jim Hall, Mario Andretti, Chuck Parsons, Lothar Motschenbacher, Dan Gurney, Mark Donohue and other champions of F.1, NASCAR, FIA and SCCA.
Over 30 of these great cars will compete in the Sunday afternoon Victory Lane Historic Can-Am Feature Race. It is preceded by the traditional pre-race festivities on the false grid which include driver introductions, the national anthems of Canada and the United States. The 30-minute race is followed by a podium ceremony with all spectators invited. Spectators will enjoy the open paddock, talks with owner/drivers, two autograph sessions with past Can-Am participants and also have the option to sign up for a very special bench racing session with past and current racers on the uniqueness of racing a Can-Am car along with insider tales of the Can-Am series.
This is the most special historic Can-Am Feature for all owner-drivers. Entrants receive many special benefits including dinners, lunches, all weekend hospitality, entrant gifts, special award for many and special parties. The Historic Can-Am Association has over 120 historic Can-Am cars and owners on the group registry. Request for entry forms for the July 2012 event will be mailed to those registered in December of 2011. Any not on the registry should contact HCAA immediately.
The traditional July historic and vintage racing weekend, now known as “The Hawk” attracts over 500 great vintage racing cars every year. They include examples of every sort of road racing car from nearly 100 years or road racing. Every type and class will be racing in some 11 races. These include: Formula Cars, Sports Racing Cars, sedans and production Sports Cars.

2011 Friday October 28: Racemaker Press Wins This Year’s Cugnot and Ingersoll Awards
Finn’s Caribbean Capers and O’Keefe Winner’s Database Recognized by SAH.
(Boston, MA) October 27, 2011 – Racemaker Press took home two coveted awards from the Society of Automotive Historians annual banquet in Hershey this year. Joel Finn’s Caribbean Capers: The Cuban Grand Prix Races of 1957, 1958 & 1960, published by Racemaker Press in collaboration with Garnet Hill Publishing, won the Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot Award for Outstanding Book of 2010, and the E.P. Ingersoll Award for Excellence in Presentation of Automotive History in Nonprint media was awarded to the O’Keefe Winners Database: A Searchable Comprehensive Digital Database of Motor Racing Events 1895-2010, by James O’Keefe.
Publisher Joseph Freeman accepted the awards, along with author, Joel Finn, at the Society’s annual meeting in Hershey, PA. “Racemaker Press is passionate about researching, recording, compiling, and publishing works that make a real contribution to automotive history,” Mr. Freeman said. “We are honored to receive this recognition from the society, of which I have been past president and am a life-long member.”
Caribbean Capers: The Cuban Grand Prix Races of 1957, 1958 & 1960, a first-hand account by noted automotive historian and author, Joel Finn, captures the dramatic story of Cuba’s major sports car races, with all the international finance, political intrigue and competitive action that characterized the island nation at that time. With more than 500 historic images of the cars, drivers and events – many never before published – and numerous meticulously compiled charts of the race entries and results, the book received rave reviews, and has been selling to a world-wide audience.
“I was one of the timing officials at the races in 1958, and gathered as much original information, first hand accounts, and rare, official records from organizers as possible, with the intention of someday creating this book,” author Joel Finn said as he accepted the award. “I’m grateful for the Society’s recognition of this book as a story that needed to be told, of a time in racing history like no other. Thank you.”
The Ingersoll Award was bestowed to Jim O’Keefe’s amazing undertaking to create the most comprehensive listing of motor racing events available, The O’Keefe Winners Database: A Searchable Comprehensive Digital Database of Motor Racing Events 1895-2010. This fully searchable database, containing the winner of over 22,000 auto races from all over the world, contains a whopping 250,000 pieces of data updated through the end of the 2010 season. Available via the website www.racemaker.com, as a download, or by purchase of a CD to install on your computer, The O’Keefe Winners Database enables quick research, with guided instructions for answers to simple or complex queries.
“I’m thrilled that the Society saw the value of this digital research database, and recognized the tremendous undertaking that Jim O’Keefe embarked upon, and has been working at, for over 40 years,” Joe Freeman said, accepting the award for Mr. O’Keefe.

2011 Tuesday October 4: Road America Partners With Hawk Performance Products Group Road America, Inc. has an expanded partnership with Carlisle Brake & Friction (CBF) that will focus on their recently formed Hawk Performance Products Group. The group, which includes the brands Hawk Performance, Cragar, and Black Rock, will enhance its presence at the legendary circuit through two opportunities: entitlement of Road America’s renowned July vintage racing event, and naming of the landmark tunnel into the paddock. Road America’s partnership with CBF began in June of 2011 with the naming of the Hawk Performance Bridge, a pedestrian walkway which spans the track from the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex to the outside of Turn 12, just past the exit out of the Carousel Turn.
Road America’s 2012 season schedule will feature the track’s signature vintage gathering under the title The Hawk with Brian Redman (The Hawk). The Hawk will carry on every tradition of the International Challenge, which draws thousands of vintage enthusiasts and car owners each summer for racing, touring and the Road & Track Magazine Concours d’Elegance. In 2012, The Hawk at Road America will be held July 12-15.
The landmark paddock tunnel will be named the Hawk Tunnel. The tunnel serves as the main entrance into the infield and runs under the track near Turn 13. At 36’ wide and 168’ long, the impressive structure features massive exterior sign faces that are visible from the main competitor gate and several spectator viewing areas.
George Bruggenthies, Road America track president and general manager, welcomes the developing partnership with the Hawk Performance Products Group. “Our customers, whether race fans or competitors, are focused on high performance. This is going to be a strong partnership with great marketing potential,” Bruggenthies said, “we’re looking forward to showcasing Hawk Performance brands before our active audience.”
Chris Koch, President of Carlisle Brake & Friction, commented, “We are excited to announce our expanded partnership with Road America, one of the most iconic names in motorsports. Through this partnership, we look forward to continuing to meet serious performance minded customers' expectations of unrivaled performance, unique styles, and overall value.” For more info, visit www.roadamerica.com or call 800-365-7223.

“The parts and the savvy to win races in 2012, including vintage race teams looking to be competitive on a tight budget, will all be in one exhibit hall at one time at the 24th Annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show. It is being held the first week in December in Orlando, FL. Entrepreneurs active in the vintage racing market will find the new product lines and shop equipment to increase sales, improve efficiency, raise quality, add performance, and strengthen profitability in 2012,” said Steve Lewis.
PRI has been called gearhead heaven, and a racer’s candy store. It’s also becoming known as the three biggest business days in racing.
Over 40,000 racing business people and professional race teams will be in attendance, coming from across the United States and 65 countries to shop and buy the new racing parts being introduced for the 2012 racing season. 1,100 companies exhibit their new product lines in racing. The technical personnel working in the exhibits, as well as combined experience of others attending the show, represents a gigantic annual gathering of the finest minds in the country when it comes to speed.
Vintage shop owners and race teams can come face to face with suppliers active in the vintage racing market such as Mark Williams Enterprises, Performance Friction, XRP, Tilton, Hawk, Wilwood, Setrab, ATL, Joe Gibbs, Driven Racing Oil, Fuel Safe, and many more.
From race engine components to suspension parts, precision machining to fabrication equipment, whatever the challenge, the solution will probably be in Orlando.
Over 100 companies in the PRI Trade Show’s Machinery Row display the latest advances in precision machining equipment with the machinery wired and available for live demonstrations.
“The PRI Trade Show is where you go when you want to get absolutely current with the latest in racing technology,” said Steve Lewis, producer of the PRI Trade Show. “Plus the expertise of the people gathered at the PRI Trade always amazes me. I believe there’s no racing challenge that can’t be solved there. A visit to the PRI Trade Show is the best first step to winning a race season in 2012. For racing businesses active in the vintage racing market, there are many revenue and profit opportunities to be seized,” continued Lewis. “It’s fun to visit with the racing companies that you already know, but the PRI Trade Show also offers those moments when you discover something new and important and unforeseen. The ‘surprise factor’ is a big part of the fun at the PRI Trade Show.”
The show is timed to allow racing retailers, race engine builders, race car builders, professional race teams, motorsports engineers, and more the opportunity to shop all the new racing products, make purchase decisions, and have them in stock for the start of the next racing season.

2011 Wednesday September 14: Two Rare pieces Of Corvette History Unveiled At Funfest September 15-18, 2011 At Mid America Motorworks. Mike Yager and family have a taste for rare Corvettes. From CERV I to the last C4 and a variety of styling cars, Yager's collection offers a glimpse at the history of America's Sports Car. This weekend, two more pages of that history will be added to the collection with the unveiling of the Alpha and Beta Build C5 Corvettes.
In 1988, GM began development of the C5 Corvette. As designs were transformed into test vehicles, just 14 Alpha Build cars were assembled for testing. The Alpha cars were a close design of how the C5 Corvette would look. The Beta, an improvement on the first incarnation of research, perfected the use of Hydro-formed frame rails and the all new Gen III Power Plant.
"Most pre-production vehicles are destroyed during testing or soon after they are no longer needed and there are no Alpha and Beta Corvettes in existence from any prior Corvette generation," said Mike Yager, Chief Cheerleader and Founder of Mid America Motorworks. "We are thrilled to add these cars to our collection. I can't think of a better time to unveil them than at Funfest with fellow Corvette enthusiasts."
The black Alphas and white Betas were camouflaged to help GM Engineers keep them under wraps during testing. The Alpha has been preserved in as-tested condition, battle scars and all, as a testament to the research process.
The Alpha and Beta Corvettes join another research vehicle in the Yager stable that played a part in the creation of the C5. In 2009 Michael and Blake Yager, Mike and Laurie’s sons, purchased the CERV-4b at auction. The CERV-4b was used as a research vehicle for the revolutionary Corvette C5 chassis. While the car appears to have a C4 body, it has many C5 upgrades such as the interior, exhaust, suspension, gas tank filler and rear convertible trunk entrance. The addition of the Alpha and Beta C5 Corvettes round out the planning stages of the C5 Corvette.
Former GM Vice President, Chevrolet General Manager Jim Perkins reflects fondly on the C5 project.
“It was so personally rewarding to be able to work with a group of people who were dedicated to win regardless of the obstacles that we faced,” said Perkins. “I am surely pleased that like the CERV-4b, the Alpha and Beta C5’s are now in a special place.”

2011 Tuesday September 13: A Great Collection Of Cars Made Up The 2011 Sunday In The Park Concours At Lime Rock Park. Part Of Historic Festival 29 Presented By Jaguar, September 2- 5.
With Jaguar as the weekend sponsor, and the MG Vintage Racers Group making Historic Festival 29 its 2011 "focus" event, there was also an absolute stellar congregation of MGs and Jags, as one would expect. Led by organizer Kent Bain, his army of judges was coordinated by Dennis David.
Lime Rock’s Sunday in the Park is unique; having the vintage racing and the concours together also provides an opportunity for significant race cars that are competing in the festival to also enter the concours.
Winning “Best of Show” was a spectacular 1911 Pope Hartford. Owned by the Dick King Collection, this 1911 Pope Hartford Model W was presented by Stu Laidlaw. Originally part of the Bill Harrah Collection and recently restored, the Model W is powered by a massive 433 cubic-inch overhead valve inline four cylinder with an utterly unique engine note. “It’s a fabulous car to drive,” said Laidlaw as he accepted the “Best in Show” trophy.
Winning the “Risky & Racy” class was Howard Kroplick’s huge 1909 ALCO racing machine. It even managed to blow one of the spectator’s sunglasses off his head with its bellowing exhaust! Built by the American Locomotive Company in Providence, R.I., the impressive machine roared to the reviewing stand to the delight of all. ALCO’s racing history includes Vanderbilt Cup wins in both 1909 and 1910.
A crowd favorite also scored a win in the “Off to Grandma’s” class: a 1951 Chevrolet Wagon owned by Jack and Vicki Deluca. The Chevy literally purred across the reviewing stand with an engine so quiet one could hear the whispers of the crowd.
This year’s honored collector was Dr. Fred Simeone of Philadelphia, who brought four extraordinary cars from his vast museum collection – all of which run, and most of which are unrestored:
- A 1956 D-Type Jaguar, the prototype of what would become the iconic E-Type (“XKE”) and which finished third at Sebring driven by Bob Sweikert and Jack Ensley
- A K3 MG, the best placed of all MGs at Le Mans (1934, fourth overall)
- A 1958 DBR1 Aston Martin World Champion Sports Racer, one of the best looking racing cars ever built
- A 1934 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 with a fabulous body by the house of Castagna, absolutely unrestored (like the K3), and also like the MG, in a true state of grace.
